The 9th Annual Indiana Cultural Competency Conference for Behavioral Healthcare will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the Holiday Inn North at the Pyramids, 3850 DePauw Boulevard, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

Background
The Indiana Minority Health Coalition, Inc., (IMHC) in partnership with the Department of Family and Social Services (FSSA), Division of Mental Health and Addictions (DMHA) and Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) to host the 9th Annual Indiana Cultural Competency Conference for Behavioral Healthcare.

Eight cultural competency conferences have been held in Indiana over the years through this partnership. The conference is usually a culmination of the various activities being offered through this partnership to various healthcare professionals Statewide: including regional trainings on cultural competency, Webinars on specific cultural competency topics and technical assistance to DMHA partners on cultural competency.

In the past three years, the conference has taken the form of a summit bringing together various experts, healthcare providers, legislators, teachers, business community and cultural competency advocates together to share experiences and lessons learned.

9th Annual Indiana Cultural Competency Conference
Our 9th Annual Indiana Cultural Competency Conference for Behavioral Healthcare focuses on the theme “Beyond Cultural Competency: What’s Next?”  The 9th annual Cultural Competency conference aims to enhance cultural competence by heightening awareness of its impact in healthcare.  

Conference Objectives
The conference will aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • Improve the quality of service and health outcomes
  • Identify challenges in implementing strategies toward cultural competency
  • Create awareness of benefits that accrue from being culturally competent
  • Enhance leadership involvement in cultural competence through leadership commitment

Target Audience
The conference targets healthcare professionals who interact with clients at a primary or secondary level, including, mental health providers, substance abuse providers, nurses, physicians, public health officials, researchers, behavioral health specialists, social workers, health educators, healthcare administrators and other healthcare staff and professionals.

In addition, students, legislators, policy-makers, policy advocates and lay persons involved in cross-cultural interactions within institutions and communities are also targeted.

Keynote Speaker
To brace the conference our keynote speaker will be none-other- than the 16th Surgeon General of the United States,
David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D, FAAFP, FACPM, FACP
Director, Satcher Health Leadership Institute
Director, Center of Excellence on Health Disparities
Poussaint-Satcher-Cosby Chair in Mental Health
Morehouse School of Medicine


Dr. Satcher is an icon in public health and has contributed significantly in elimination of health disparities, including shedding light on neglected issues like mental health. He has published and written widely on the topic of cultural competence and mental health.
